Background
Home of Hope Liberia is a women's crisis shelter offering a safe place for women in Liberia facing displacement or extreme poverty. The organization was co-founded four years ago, in 2022, by Margot and Annette, a hospital social worker.
Margot's inspiration for starting the shelter came from her own experience as a mission hospital nurse. In that role, she saw women facing domestic violence, extreme poverty, and desperate survival situations, with no safe accommodation available anywhere in the country. Home of Hope was built to fill that gap.
Today, the organization operates with 13 paid Liberian staff members and supports about 14 women at a time. There's no formal intake process or advertising; every woman who comes through the door arrives by word of mouth, referred by hospitals, police, community members, or the government.
The support doesn't end when a woman leaves. Home of Hope provides six months of rent, along with domestic supplies like mattresses and pots, and business supplies to help each woman build financial independence. Former guests have also formed an active alumni group, giving them an ongoing source of peer sisterhood and support after they've moved on.
The Challenge
As a small charity, Home of Hope depends heavily on its annual fundraising dinner to fund the shelter's operations. Every dollar spent on event logistics and technology is a dollar that doesn't go toward supporting the women in the home. Margot needed a way to run a professional, well-organized event without diverting scarce resources toward ticketing and administrative overhead.
The Solution
Home of Hope uses Brushfire to run its primary annual fundraising dinner. Brushfire provides its ticketing and technology services to the charity free of charge, which means every dollar saved on admin goes directly back into supporting the women in the home.
Margot says the platform has significantly reduced the administrative burden of running the event, made the charity look highly professional to donors and guests, and seamlessly accommodated international donors giving to the cause.
"It's confidence for us. Brushfire has made us look really professional. I couldn't begin to put a figure on how much time and effort it saved us because I just don't even think we could have done it without you guys." —Margot Biggs, Founder, Home of Hope Liberia
The Result
The impact of that saved time and money is tangible. Home of Hope recently hit its savings goal to purchase a small organizational bus or van, funded largely by its most recent event in May.
Looking ahead, the organization hopes to eventually acquire a larger property to expand how many women it can support at once. To help get there, Home of Hope plans to keep alternating its annual fundraising dinner between South Queensland (Brisbane) and North Queensland, Australia, growing its donor base in both regions along the way.
Every dollar Brushfire saves Home of Hope on ticketing and event technology is a dollar that goes straight back to the women they serve.
TLDR
Home of Hope Liberia runs one crucial fundraising dinner a year, so it has to count. Brushfire handles the ticketing and event tech, making the night look polished and taking international donors without a hitch, so the team can spend their energy on the women they serve instead of the logistics. That one dinner just covered a new van, and a bigger property is next.
