Brushfire has been a Square partner over the past few years. Jorin Slaybaugh has led the Brushfire Technology team on multiple projects during this time. Last week in San Francisco at Square Unboxed, Jorin had the opportunity to join a panel discussion and share more about Brushfire. We figured this was a good time to ask him a little about himself and his time at Square.
What is your job at Brushfire?
I’m the co-founder and CTO, which means I lead our amazing team of software engineers as we push the envelope of what is possible in event management software.
How long have you worked on Brushfire + Square projects?
Brushfire started working with Square in early 2017. We started with their web payment form and then the Point of Sale API. Most recently we started doing work with their In-App Payments SDK — a connection that has allowed our clients to see a 22% average boost in registrations for their upcoming events!
Why were you at Square Unboxed?
We have a great partnership with Square! Because of the unique solutions we’ve created with them, I was asked to be on a panel to speak about building with Square as a platform. I shared exactly what we’ve done and what we like/dislike about Square. Also on the panel were Luke Freeman (Yakka), Kush Patel (theCut), and Ariel David (GoParrot.ai).
What did you share during your panel discussion?
I explained the unique scenarios that we face when managing events and the solutions we’ve created to deal with them. For example, our tablet kiosk solution enables unbelievably quick registration for upcoming events using the information you’ve already provided for the event you’re currently attending. And our new Event App allows attendees to engage and register from their smartphones without having to leave their seats.
What was your main takeaway from Square Unboxed?
It was an amazing opportunity to connect with other like-minded developers focused on empowering sellers all over the world. The best part was being able to interact directly with Project Managers and Engineers from the Square team as they announced new features, listen to our feedback and answered specific questions about our implementations.
What was your favorite part of the trip?
All the amazing speakers! Hearing from Common (Musical Artist), Jack Dorsey (Square CEO), Balaji Srinivasan (Angel Investor and Entrepreneur), as well as, stories from organizations like Instagram, Airbnb, and Uber encouraged and challenged all of us to think outside of what we’re doing currently. And all that was topped off with Square CTO, Alyssa Henry, who gave Brushfire a shoutout, and Square General Manager, Carl Perry sharing Square’s vision for the future.
Anything else we should know?
It’s always a treat to get to visit San Francisco and if you’re ever in the area, Mama’s on Washington Square is quite possibly the best breakfast on the planet! 🙂
